If you’re like any girl on this planet and quiver at the thought of applying makeup correctly, then you need to know some basic tips and tricks on how to apply it perfectly from the very first time. So, here are the 3 common makeup mistakes you probably do without even realizing it and, more importantly, how to fix them.

#1:  Applying blush

Do not apply blush too low as you will end up with uneven face tone. Instead, distribute the blush to the centre of the apple of your face, blending the peachy colour along your cheekbone. You can even accentuate your cheeks by stippling a highlighter on top of the cheekbones.

#2: Contouring your face

Contouring your face should not give you a different tan! So it’s very important to know how to contour your face properly. Apply highlighter on those areas of your face that catch light in order to define your natural facial features and create a gorgeous glow. The ideal places are your cheekbones, along your temples, the bridge of your nose between the eyes, underneath the arch of the brow, and right above your Cupid’s bow. Apply a small amount of highlighter right in the corners of your eyelids to open up your eyes. As for the darker foundation, it goes on the sides of your nose, right under your cheekbones, and around your hairline. If you have a larger forehead, carry straight into the hairline to minimize it. Do not forget to blend your highlighter and dark foundation with a fan brush or makeup sponge to avoid harsh lines and edges.

#3: Putting lipstick on

Before anything else, it’s very important to prepare and moisturise your lips. Dry lips and lipstick do not mix, so make sure you prepare your lips area first. In order to remove any dead skin cells and have a smooth canvas to work on, apply your favourite scrub onto a clean toothbrush and use a circular motion to gently exfoliate your lips. If your lips are cracked or really sensitive, a children’s toothbrush will work best for you. Next, grab your non-oily lip balm and apply it from the centre of the bottom lip first towards the corners. Once you’ve prepared and moisturized your lips properly, you can put your favourite lipstick on.
