Russia is the country with the largest land area in the world and since the country is so big, there are undoubtedly a lot of things to be seen there. Russia is also a country with rich and interesting culture, not to mention its history. There are a lot of things to be seen and learned there which makes it a perfect place for a long vacation.

Russia is located on two continents – Europe and Asia, and it is a northern country which makes people automatically conclude that it an extremely cold country with low temperatures. Well, this is not exactly the case, but still summer is the best time of the year to visit Russia.

#1 Sochi

The first place in our list is becoming more and more popular among tourists. This is Sochi. It is located on the Black Sea coast and it is getting larger every year. Sochi became famous after the Winter Olympic Games in 2014 were held there. And since it is facing the sea, it is a very attractive destination for people who would want to spend their summer vacation at the beach.

There are 4 seasons. It could be concluded that this place has the best of both worlds – summer and winter. It has great beaches which tourists can enjoy in the summer, and great ski facilities for those people who love winter sports. Apart from the winter disciplines, one could watch Formula 1 Grand Prix which will be held there in 2018.

Sochi is definitely one of the places in Russia which one should consider visiting when they go there.

#2 Trans-Siberian Railway

If you love travelling by train, then this journey would definitely appeal to you. The trans-Siberian Railway is one of the most popular train journeys in the world. It is a long one, it lasts about a fortnight. It starts from Moscow and it end in Vladivostok, which is another popular Russian city and it is located close to the Russian border with China.

Many young people decide to embark on this journey because it is said that the party in the separate carriages is a non-stop one. There are people not only from Russia but also from different parts of the world who decided to spend two weeks traveling with people they do not know and enjoy themselves.

Do not worry about the accommodation, there will be a bed for you and, of course, showers and private bathrooms. This way you will feel comfortable throughout the whole journey as well. And speaking of the Trans-Siberian Railway, here is the next suggestion in our list.

#3 Irkutsk

Irkutsk is another famous Russian city and the reason for this is that it is the most popular stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The city is said to be the capital of Eastern Siberia, which, as you can probably guess, makes it a very cold place in the winter months. That is why it is better to visit it in the summer.

One of the things that tourists find very attractive about the city is that there is an interesting mixture of two types of buildings. The first type are the cute wooden houses typical for northern countries in the past, and the other type are the communist type of buildings left from the Soviet rule.

Another interesting thing about Irkutsk is that Lake Baikal is 45 kilometers from the city. If you decide to visit the city, then you should also visit the western shoreline of the lake. And speaking of the lake, here is our next suggestion!

#4 Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is lake the deepest and oldest lake in the world. Another interesting fact about the lake is that it holds 20% of the world’s fresh water and not only that, but the water in the lake is also considered to be one of the clearest lake water in the world. But this is not the only reason why you should consider visiting the lake.

It is also popular for its nature. The flora and the fauna there are amazing and the scenery is breath-taking. The beautiful nature there has turned the place into a favorite stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway. There are also people who decide to visit Siberia just because of Lake Baikal.

#5 Saint Basil’s Cathedral

When people think of Russia and some of its most famous landmarks, Saint Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most popular ones they think of. It is one of the symbols of the country and it is located in the center of Moscow. Another interesting thing about the cathedral is that it was built in the 16th century which makes one of the oldest ones in the country.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral attracts a lot of tourists not only because of its international popularity, but because of its architecture. It was built to resemble the shape of a burning bonfire with its domes being so colorful and having pointy tops. It is a really impressive building worth visiting.
